Frequently Asked Questions
Oh, I don’t dance, I can’t dance!
You are in luck, because everyone is a dancer. There is no skill required. You may truly love finding your dance with us!
Do you drink or smoke weed before you dance? Do you do drugs?
This is the natural way to move, without substances. Trust me, it is wonderful to be present to connect with yourself and others.
So you just DJ?
I do lead the music and also guide the movement practices up into the ecstatic dance. All of the movement is focused on exploring what feels good for your own body. By the way, the music is beautiful, starts slow and guides us into the drums and ecstatic dance.
Is it like a rave? What does Yoga Trance Dance mean
Raves do serve a purpose in the world, but this is not a rave. Similar type of freedom to play, explore, and have fun. It is a guided ritual with world music. The “Trance” in “Yoga Trance Dance” means movement meditation, which is explored in dance cultures around the world.
What do you actually do?
It’s best to just experience Rhythm & Prana Flow. For my curious friends, we start slow on our mats in movement meditation, it moves naturally into yoga and later into ecstatic dance with EPIC music. All you have to do is show up and be ready to move :)
Do I need a yoga mat?
A yoga mat is optional, you can be on the floor, ground, a mat or towel, at your own comfort level.
How do you incorporate yoga into the practice? How is it connected with yoga?
There is prana flow yoga seamlessly woven into the practice, and it also includes movement meditation and movement kriyas in the dance.
Can I skip the warm up? (no, the beginning is the best class, ritual)
Please arrive on time and participate in the entire ritual, similar to attending a yoga class. The beginning really sets the stage and drops us into our natural rhythms preparing us for dance.
What kind of music do you play?
The music is new for each class. It is a beautiful blend of world music including meditation type music, down tempo, r&b, hip hop, electronic, dance music, and drums. Each song is so good your body will automatically want to dance!
How did you learn to do this?
First I became a yoga teacher and then started exploring ecstatic dance. I have been studying and working with Shiva Rea since 2012. Shiva created Yoga Trance Dance based on yoga and world movement practices 25 years ago.
could you share the playlist of rad music you use?!
